– an evening with musician & activist Emmanuel Jal
Talk, followed by film screening of The Good Lie
At the age of seven, after his mother was killed by government troops, Emmanuel Jal was swept up into the brutal two decade long war in Sudan. Recruited as a child soldier – one of 10,000 on both sides of the conflict – he fought with the rebels.
At the age of 11, he escaped and trekked for four months through Africa. Rescued by a British aid worker and smuggled into Kenya, Jal finally received an education and discovered the power of music. Now based in Canada, he has released five albums mixing rap with Arabic, English, Swahili, Dinka and Nuer lyrics. He has appeared in two films, The Good Lie and Africa United, while a documentary, War Child, chartered his life. He has worked as a spokesman for the Make Poverty History campaign, the Coalition of Child Soldiers and the Control Arms campaign. His biggest passion remains Gua Africa, a charity he founded to provide children and adults affected by war and poverty with an education.
